Hoya latifolia 'Pot of Gold' is a rare, decorative houseplant from the dogbane family (Apocynaceae). It captivates with its large, robust leaves featuring striking variegated patterns: the center of the leaves glows creamy yellow to golden, while the edges remain rich green—hence the name “Pot of Gold.”
Characteristics
Growth habit: Climbing or trailing
Leaves: Thick, waxy, oval to roundish, with golden-yellow central variegation
Flower scent: Sweet and intense, especially in the evening
Flowers: Star-shaped, usually pink to creamy umbels
Growth rate: Medium to slow
Special feature: Very decorative collector's Hoya with exceptional leaf patterns
Location
The plant prefers:
bright, indirect light
warm temperatures between 18–28 °C (64–82 °F)
high humidity
no direct midday sun
The brighter the location (without strong direct sun), the more intense the variegation remains.
Care
Watering: Only water when the substrate is slightly dry
Substrate: Airy and well-draining, e.g., with bark, perlite, and coconut fiber
Fertilization: Sparingly every 2–4 weeks in spring and summer
Avoid waterlogging: The roots are sensitive to consistently wet soil
Notes
Variegated Hoyas often grow slower than green forms.
Trellises or hanging baskets are suitable for vigorous growth.
Under good conditions, the plant can develop increasingly larger leaves over the years.
Hoya originates from tropical regions of Asia and is particularly popular among collectors of exotic houseplants.
