Hoya imbricata is one of the most fascinating and unusual species within the Hoya genus. Known as the Shingle Plant, it grows flat along surfaces, laying its circular leaves like overlapping roof shingles. An absolutely unique sight – perfect for lovers of rare and decorative growth habits.

Characteristics

  • Leaves: Large, round to shield-like leaves that lie flat against the substrate. The leaf surface often displays attractive patterns in shades of green, gray, and olive. Each leaf slightly overlaps the previous one – creating the characteristic "shingle" look.

  • Growth Habit: Creeping-climbing and firmly adhesive. The plant thrives best on a vertical substrate such as wooden boards, tree bark, or special shingle boards.

  • Flowers: Like other Hoyas, this species also produces fragrant, star-shaped flowers, often in creamy yellow to purple hues.

Special Features

  • Shingle-Growth-Habit: One of the few plants that lays its leaves flat and tight against surfaces – spectacular and absolutely decorative.

  • Rare & Desirable: A true rarity among collectors, especially when well-established.

  • Tropical Flair: Its unique growth habit makes it a living work of art on the wall.

Location & Care

  • Light: Bright, indirect light. Some morning or evening sun is well tolerated. Too little light leads to less intensely colored leaves.

  • Temperature: Warm and consistent – 20 to 28°C ideal. Sensitive to cold.

  • Watering: Moderate. The plant prefers slightly dry substrate between waterings. No waterlogging!

  • Humidity: High (60–80%). It grows particularly well and adheres strongly to the surface in tropical conditions.

  • Substrate: Very airy substrate (e.g., orchid mix), as the roots love plenty of oxygen.

  • Mounting: A mounted board or a piece of bark is ideal for the plant to display its natural growth.

Care Tip

Mounted growth is crucial to maintain the typical shingle effect. Always keep the plant in a warm, humid microclimate – such as in a display case, terrarium, or near a window with high humidity.
