The Alocasia melo is a relatively compact and exotic houseplant that makes an interesting addition to any home with its extraordinary leaves and striking colors. This Alocasia species belongs to the Araceae family and is native to Southeast Asia.
Characteristics:
-
Leaves: The leaves of the Alocasia melo are the outstanding feature of this plant. They are thick and have a distinctive, velvety texture. The leaves are dark green to almost black-green and have silver, metallic veins, which give them a luxurious appearance. This structured surface and the veins give the plant a particularly elegant, dramatic look.
-
Size: The Alocasia melo remains relatively compact compared to other Alocasia species. Its leaves typically reach a length of about 15 to 30 cm. The plant grows to a height of about 30 to 60 cm, making it ideal for smaller rooms or tables.
-
Growth habit: This plant has an upright, bushy growth habit. It grows from a central corm and forms several strong, thick stems on which the distinctive leaves sit. Its growth is compact and dense, making it an excellent choice for interior design.
Care:
-
Light: Alocasia melo prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight should be avoided as it can burn the leaves. However, it also grows in slightly shadier areas, but growth is slower there.
-
Water: This plant likes to be kept evenly moist, but it is sensitive to waterlogging. The soil should dry out slightly between waterings, but not completely. It is important that excess water can drain away to prevent root rot. During the dormant period (autumn/winter), it needs less water.
-
Temperature and humidity: Alocasia melo prefers warm temperatures between 20–26°C and high humidity. Ideally, humidity should be at least 60%, which is why misting the leaves or using a humidifier can be helpful. Too low humidity can cause the leaves to develop brown edges or fall off.
-
Fertilizer: During the growing season (spring to summer), the plant can be fed every two weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer. In winter, when the plant enters a dormant phase, fertilization should be reduced or stopped altogether.
Special features:
-
Exotic appearance: The characteristic leaves with their metallic veins make the Alocasia melo a real eye-catcher in any room. Its velvety leaf feel and dark coloration give it a dramatic charm.
-
Air-purifying properties: Like many other Alocasia species, the Alocasia melo also has air-purifying properties. It filters pollutants from the air, thus ensuring a healthier indoor climate.
Delivered in a 12 cm pot.
