Teil 1: Pflanzen & Wohnraum – Das perfekte Miteinander

Part 1: Plants & Living Spaces – The Perfect Symbiosis

Houseplants are long past being mere decoration. They are living companions that create atmosphere, structure rooms, and transform our homes into natural oases of well-being. Whether in modern lofts, small city apartments, or cozy old buildings – with the right selection and placement, rooms can be completely reimagined.

This article is the first part of our series

"Plants & Living Spaces – The Perfect Partnership"

It shows you how you can strategically use your green companions as design elements – for more style, harmony, and vitality in your home.

Strategically use plants as room designers

Houseplants give rooms structure, color, and life. They can fill empty corners, create transitions, and purposefully influence the spatial effect. While some plants convey lightness and tranquility, others appear imposing and powerful. This allows you to consciously change the character of your rooms.

Plants for small spaces – Big greenery in small areas

In small spaces, less is more. Opt for a few expressive plants instead of many small pots. Hanging plants like Pothos, Scindapsus, or Tradescantia utilize vertical space and keep the floor clear. Narrow plants like Sansevieria, Zamioculcas, or palms also fit perfectly into small niches or corners. Wall shelves, hanging pots, or macrame holders also help to use vertical space – creating a feeling of openness, rather than confinement.

Large plants for high ceilings or open spaces

Large plants can act as natural room dividers in open living areas or rooms with high ceilings. Monstera deliciosa, Ficus lyrata, or Strelitzia nicolai add volume and height and create striking accents. They can create structure between living, dining, and working areas and give open rooms more depth. Consciously place large plants freely – as a green statement – instead of hiding them in corners. This way, they act like living sculptures that give your room character.

Create green levels – Dynamics through height and depth

A harmonious room thrives on different levels. Therefore, combine plants of different growth heights: from small ferns on the windowsill to medium-height plants on side tables and floor plants with large leaves. This variation creates depth and naturalness. It looks especially beautiful if you work with plant stands, stools, or shelves – creating a flowing, lively overall picture.

Color and form design with leaves

Leaves are like nature's textures – they bring movement and contrast into the room. Variegated plants add color and patterns, while species with large, smooth leaves like Monstera or Philodendron exude tranquility and elegance. Round leaves, like those of Peperomia, appear friendly and harmonious, while pointed leaves, as seen in palms or dragon trees, create dynamism. This allows you to deliberately create a certain mood – whether calm, playful, or modern.

Harmoniously combine plants with materials

The interplay of plants and materials is crucial for the overall impression. Natural materials such as wood, linen, or rattan emphasize the homey, earthy character of green plants. In modern, minimalist rooms with concrete or metal, plants create a welcome contrast and bring warmth to the ambiance. Planters made of ceramic, terracotta, or concrete help to emphasize styles – from Boho to industrial to a minimalist look.

Create atmosphere with plants

Plants influence our mood – completely subconsciously. They create tranquility, promote concentration, and increase our well-being. Use soft, indirect light to highlight leaves, or strategically place plants in areas you want to emphasize: next to the couch, at the dining table, or in the entrance area. This creates a natural, lively look that is both inviting and calming.

Conclusion

Plants are the simplest and most effective way to make living spaces lively. With the right selection and placement, proportions, moods, and spatial effects can be purposefully influenced. Whether you have a minimalist home or a cozy old apartment – plants create connection, peace, and naturalness. They are the green soul of your home.
